female genital mutilation
happening daily in the third world
as i write
even in the western suburbs of sydney
the law goes soft turning a blind eye
fear of cultural insensitivity
when a girl child was born
my grandmother used to cross herself
and ask for a special blessing
i never knew why
i never asked why
as i trudged the path of life
now i know why
freedom equality and justice for women
will only happen with women
being bold, supporting their sisters
demanding and fighting for rights and justice

the real men
the ones who love and respect women will join them
being bold, supporting them
demanding and fighting for equal rights and justice
hand in hand

if you know or own
one of these old white geezas
stick this placard in his hand
on his way to the shops
(smiles)

god knows what prompts these women to do such barbaric act in the name of tradition and religion even in these days..sad..
ReplyDelete& thanks for the smile in the end :)
There is no justification these days for either male circumcism or female genital mutilation. When I child comes of a responsible age to decide for themselves that is fine for they alone to choose.
ReplyDeleteMale circumcision is not the equivalent of female genital mutilation. A penectomy is. There is no culture in the history of the world that performs a penectomy on males.
DeleteI think there is evidence of penectomy in ancient times for humiliation purposes (in slavery).
DeleteThank you for telling it like it is.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, you call it out. Turning the tables to own a geezer is pretty funny--I didn't see that coming, but I like the usefulness of men you indicate throughout. So many ways have been invented over time to abuse women. Our power must be fearsome indeed.
ReplyDeleteNice. You begin with something so seriously inhumane, then end with a piece of humor. I like your balance.
ReplyDeleteGreat words and images to support your own. And I do happen to own a geeza, so wish I had read this yesterday....
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's not too late to send him out!
;)
I love this important message and smiled at the thought of sticking a placard in an old white geezer's hands, lol.
ReplyDeleteThank you for calling attention to this
ReplyDeleteThe video made me weep and I remain sad whilst writing now. This is and issue that needs to raised and raised and raised.
ReplyDeleteKind regards
Anna. :o[
A shameful practice, Rall, that is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what women suffer daily in certain cultures. A powerful write (though truly in your style, you make us smile in the end).
ReplyDeletePS: One old, white, geezer here lining up to receive his placard prior to going out to the shops.
