the bright lights flick on
this was martin's
' time to go music '
the patrons' faces
robbed of soft lighting
all looked a little worse for wear
from a night of drinking and flirting
the bra free
unbuttoned shirt'd barmaids
set about cleaning the mirrors
collecting the glasses
while desperates
rather than going home alone
offered to help the nymphettes
with the cleaning up

martin du berry
colossus of cool
the very eccentric owner
an east end londoner
spent his evenings
slumped on a garbage bin
donned in a duffle coat
in any weather
outside
manning the door
invitation only subscription
much sought after

and hard to get
this was the ' it ' place
in sydney at one time
before the oxford st invasion
by the rainbow movement
barristers bankers film makers
revolutionaries students artists
all rubbed shoulders in
the unusual mix
orchestrated by maestro martin
i met someone interesting there
you know how they say
you don't meet nice men in bars
it's true:)

You don't have to like the interesting people but merely learn from them but then go your own way. The reminded me of living in Brighton, England in the late '60's.
ReplyDeletecolossus of cool.. a great choice of words for the picture you've painted!

Yes to all the ways that this applies.
I love the music again, always. You'd think that would be enough. I wonder if I've always played it safe?
Your closing observation is so true. I learned that the hard way. I only went into a bar once - and the repercussions were long-lasting.
ReplyDeleteA moment brought to life. You took me there.
