she had never been to a masked ball before
she did however recognise her nana's fox fur
the one which used to lurk in the wardrobe
with its pointy little nose and beady eyes
grandpas dollar coins lived in a cigarette tin
at the bottom behind the soft goose
filled with nan's silk stockings
' take only one coin at a time' he said
the fox counts it
i used to have a thing for zorro
but being superficial and flighty
men in masks loss their appeal
he was replaced many times over
as an object of my desire

a cucumber mask for tired eyes
and a facial would be nice
well maybe in another life
when she worked out how to restump the house
without killing herself and shelling out a fortune
she began to regret she had not studied
physics and engineering at some stage

no one knows
what goes on behind the mask
people are uncomfortable with
the reality of the lives of others
we learn
suffering is best masked by smiles
no one wants to know a morose mary

he pinned this to his door
was this a reminder to himself
or us
“Our life is too easy, our complaints are over-dramatized. Faced with the complaints of so many people, of so many brothers and sisters who are in the dark, who have lost all memory, almost lost all hope – who are experiencing this exile from themselves, who are exiled, even from themselves, our complaints are nothing!”
who does "our" refer to
if you have a swiss guard servants acolytes
to fetch and carry for you
plus
a private jet and a limousine
an understaniding of "our"
may vary enormously
well in any case
" who am i to judge?"

Poets United

What a treat! I was at once entertained, fascinated, amused, and, at the last, contemplative of the meaning of "our". BRAVO
ReplyDeleteWhew! Too well can I imagine all of this going on behind the mask. Poets are lucky to have an outlet. Thank you for all the insightful vignettes in this whole.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely inspirational!! Kudos!!
ReplyDeleteHaving got all that out, no doubt you then sighed and made yourself a cup of something be it tea, coffee or even a glass of wine and relaxed for a bit. Very few really know us, mask or not. Rather than you think this is an ambilavent comment I did rather enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteOh Golly gumdrops...how nice !
DeleteI especially love the woman figuring out how to re-stump the house - been there, done that. I once lived in a place whose weight rested on a plastic MILK CRATE. LOL. (Loved that place!) These were very entertaining. Loved them.
ReplyDeleteI think we covered it all and impressively too
ReplyDeleteNow...that's a many faceted mask. Well put. Love fox counting coins :)
ReplyDeletewow a lot of food for thought A philosophical piece about the wearing of masks and if we might wear a mask that is over-dramatic Who knows. Well written
ReplyDeleteI still rather like Zorro! :)
