The Journey
the journey is a challenge
minnows swimming
and darting in and out
amongst the sharks
performing an arpeggio
of survival techniques
yet all heading in the one direction
towards the ferryman
he beckons in the distance
more visible on the horizon
than before
some travellers have huge galleons
filled with gold bullion
not understanding the ferryman
cannot be bought
their understanding
of camels and needles is
of stock market commodities
they will have to jettison
the lot before boarding
others are just swimming
a slow breast stroke
their treasure -
a majestic dazzlement
in nimble fingers
the living joy hidden
in their ears eyes
hearts smiles and words

brilliant. I like this!
ReplyDeleteI love the minnows and shark images. All journeys are challenging, no doubt.
ReplyDeleteA good take on the subject.
ReplyDeleteGood take on the prompt.
ReplyDeleteIs the beckoning ferryman Charon, by any chance? :)
ReplyDeleteWho else could it be?
DeleteI LOVE the treasure stored up in our hearts. And get satisfaction out of the fact billionaires cant take it with them. Ha. I love the lines about the ferryman being more visible on the horizon these days. Yes, indeed he is. I am trying not to catch his eye, LOL.
ReplyDeleteWe are all making the journey but at different pace and different energy levels...
ReplyDelete"a majestic dazzlement in nimble fingers" Love
ReplyDeleteLove the use of Arpeggio and I can see the minnows dart in and out on the rythm of chopin
An enigmatic write that required more than one reading! Very clever.
ReplyDeleteOh that ferryman- it's amazing how we know he's there and yet think we can escape and live forever!
ReplyDeleteThis is now my FAVORITE of yours. The images are unique and exquisite. And I listened to the recording of "performing an arpeggio / of survival techniques"while reading, which made the experience even more remarkable.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan. The poem was written to be read with the accompanying music.
DeleteMy grandfather used to say to me, Rall, "Become rich if you must, but always remember shrouds have no pockets..."
ReplyDeleteA wonderful poem for this journey we call life adn your choice of composer, music and performer, so so appropriate. Thank you...
