always the one who settled for crumbs
better than nothing she thought to herself
fear of alone being left on the shelf
boy did she hang with some terrible chums

who masqueraded as interesting types
conceptual artists so cool they were
wearing rings and beads and covered in fur
smoking this and that in ornate hash pipes
deep in her centre she knew this a lie
time to move on stop settling for less
leave them all to their perennial highs
hit the road see what happens i guess
cross fingers and toes and learn to fly
up up and away from this earth bound mess
"hit the the road see what happens'...Best way to clear the mess.

Lol, i know that girl! Yes, she must fly higher.
ReplyDeleteLove the last couplet! One feels that it's easier, sometimes, to admire others and it takes time to invest in oneself.
ReplyDeleteIt's good of her to move on from these masquerading types. An interesting verse — dating is never easy especially when the people one engages with are like this.

Hahaha been there, done that, and left without the tee shirt : )

It is curious when young how we used to demean ourselves to fit in to what we thought were the right or exciting crowd. However I soon found that there were others taround who were interested in art, music and life generally and not all that keen on getting drunk every night.
ReplyDeleteEventually we learn – such as these are NOT better than nothing!
ReplyDeleteYes! A sonnet with rhyme in all the right places!
ReplyDeleteThose "who masqueraded as interesting types" get left behind, one hopes, when Woodstock is possible. Great choices--I enjoyed this very much.
Better to be away from the mess then!
ReplyDeleteSometimes, often times, the road is the best option. That's why we have intuition, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteLoved this poem, always good to know when you've outgrown people.
ReplyDeleteThe masquerading types are never easy to hang around with.. better to move on!💜
ReplyDeleteSome times we just gotta pull up our petticoats and hit the road...

If only there were a way to flee this earthbound mess (other than the obvious, of course).
