he had nothing to gain
and a lot to lose
by opposing
his eminent colleagues' judgement
nevertheless
he did not concur
his innate sense of justice truth
and respect for the rule of law
in spite of the baying for blood
by the crowd
( hmm sounds familiar
same time of year as well)
gave him no choice but to say
NOT GUILTY
this man must be acquitted
he did not wash his hands
like Pontuis Pilate
he wrote a brilliant unarguable
200 page judgement instead
which all the judges of the High Court
upheld unanimously
and so it came to pass
during holy week
the prince of the church
who had been languishing in prison
(maximum security for the most dangerous
criminals in the country)
for more than a year
had his ankle bracelets removed
and returned home today
to recuperate in a carmelite convent
DEO GRATIAS !
hope those nuns know how to
whip up a juicy steak and chips served with a cold beer
oh well
sure it will be better than prison fare
Full statement from Cardinal George Pell
I have consistently maintained my innocence while suffering from a serious injustice.This has been remedied today with the High Court’s unanimous decision.
I look forward to reading the Judgment and reasons for the decision in detail.
I hold no ill will toward my accuser, I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough.
However my trial was not a referendum on the Catholic Church; nor a referendum on how Church authorities in Australia dealt with the crime of paedophilia in the Church.
The point was whether I had committed these awful crimes, and I did not.
The only basis for long term healing is truth and the only basis for justice is truth, because justice means truth for all.
A special thanks for all the prayers and thousands of letters of support.
I want to thank in particular my family for their love and support and what they had to go through; my small team of advisors; those who spoke up for me and suffered as a result; and all my friends and supporters here and overseas.
Also my deepest thanks and gratitude to my entire legal team for their unwavering resolve to see justice prevail, to throw light on manufactured obscurity and to reveal the truth.
Finally, I am aware of the current health crisis. I am praying for all those affected and our medical frontline personnel.

ReplyDeleteYes, much as I love the works of Hieronymus, I wouldn't like them to manifest in my back yard!
ReplyDeleteI have personal reasons to intensely dislike, despise and distrust the Cardinal. However they are nothing to do with what he was accused of, and certainly don't constitute evidence of his guilt in this case. He was not acquitted, but released for lack of sufficient evidence of guilt. So who knows? Only himself, his accusers, and God. I think many who share my dislike etc, are influenced by that to assume his guilt in this matter. But you are correct: the rule of law is important, along with its proper interpretation, both of which must be upheld. That is the only way justice can prevail overall, even if some may question individual cases.
He was freed because the High Court unanimously found no evidence to support this conviction. The two lower courts got it wrong. The inference that he is guilty but freed on some legal technicality is incorrect. The claims by the complainant were preposterous and a physical impossibility in the circustances.The fact that it was a secret trial is the most disgraceful incident in Australian legal history and very reminiscent of the Third Reich. No doubt Justice Weinberg felt the same way. A discernible shudder was felt by Jewish lawyers and Jews everywhere. This malicious witch hunt of the Cardinal will probably be ongoing as scape goats(see Jesus Christ)are always an easy target.

ReplyDeleteApologies; I understand that I had it wrong and he was indeed acquitted. As the High Court has made its ruling, which must be respected, I certainly don’t intend to express any further opinions on the matter. The point I was trying to make above is that in most cases what members of the public have been saying, whether pro or con, has indeed been mere opinion.

A fun read, I like your putting one group of Kelly's five at a time. I'll pick on Day 7 to comment today. Our judge has refused to release "non-violent prisoners." It would amount possibly to around 1200 with good prison records in our county jail be released. As of today only 16 prisoners and 21 personnel have tested positive and 187 staff quarantined as "exposed". Our sraddle-the-fence governor said do not release non-violent prisoners. But then county officials and a district judge cannot agree. 12 of the 7600 inmates had been released before the judge ordered a stop. no telling how many will become I'll and perhaps die. Big price to pay for a hot check or marijuana sale.
