in the still of the evening
listening to opera
on an old phonograph
memories came flooding back
of another life
of another time
before the war
the old immigrant couple
had survived
but the sadness
etched in their faces was
palpable
heart wrenching
all the time
watched furtively
by their young grandchild
never to be forgotten
one of their favourites
don't lose heart
listen to his advice
it will work out

Through your words, I can imagine that couple, hopeful with hesitation, recalling their lives.

Heartfelt words Rall. Wishing you a happy Sunday.

That hovering observation really caught my attention.
ReplyDeleteA poignant and timely piece..
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful Rall. One of your finest.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful <3
ReplyDeleteA good write, Rall, says what you want it to say. But what we all hate to read, like their young grandchild loss. It was a terrible time. We've been to Dachau and Auschwitz, awful.

love the photo... it is a wonder to see those who survived and have lived on .... yes, their faces and their eyes.... to those who smile brings so much hope
ReplyDeleteA beautifully written poem that stays with you.
