At first they indulged
in bouts of banter
with a strong element
of flirtation
Then the direction changed
into something a little more serious
Duty and morality emblazoned
on both consciences
brought this galloping dalliance
to a halt suddenly in a cloud of dust
Now that it has settled
and the waters are as still
as a mill pond
all memory of it has faded
with just ripples from the wind
time to time
Eloquent and bittersweet!
ReplyDeletetime to time..aah the perfect way to feel those memories coming in and out of focus..i love the floaty swimmy feel of this piece..quite soothing in a way..jae
ReplyDeleteaw how sad passion has fled hope it flickers more then from time to time
ReplyDeleteMemorable, evocative, rather moving...
ReplyDeleteAh! Those "what ifs" from long ago. Why is it after so many busy years such short romances still persist in your mind. Now you have rekindled a few!
ReplyDeleteNice sketch of what happens when we flirt with temptation.
ReplyDeleteEvoked lots of feelings -- wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI like this very much. Melancholy and dreamy is the feeling it gives me. I think most of us have some of those sweet memories
ReplyDeleteit seems sad that duty got in the way, but maybe it wasn't really meant to be more that a fleeting memory. Really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteI can feel those ripples from here, though. I like the cloud of dust too.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure a lot of readers will relate to this. It definitely has that ring of truth to it. Nice write!
ReplyDeleteVery evocative. Well done!
ReplyDeleteit is like a stone thrown in a pond...for a short time it ripples than is forgotten as it sinks to the bottom...
