Let It Go

midweek motif poets united
poetry jam

you called

we go back years
a friendship
framed by a million
telephone conversations
une amie d'enfance

we battled through
trials and tribulations
of teenage angst
of student life
of broken hearts
of work life
of children
of marriage
of divorce

you said
you were calling
after all these years
because
you found my number
at the bottom of a drawer

je te dis
je prefere la politesse
la gentillesse des etrangeres

(i'm telling you i prefer good manners
the kindness of strangers)

  1. Wow, Rallentanda, that must have been a very moving conversation you had. Sometimes it is the people you have known the longest, and through the most difficult times, who know you the most. Even if the phone number was found at the bottom of the drawer.

  3. This makes me think of the friends at the other end of the phone who talked me through my most difficult years. The kindness of people, indeed........

    1. Ummmm .... that's a good point. How do you explain to someone that you've lost touch with why you're contacting them again?

    2. I actually had a best friend who had not contacted me in two years preamble her contact with" I know it seems as if I am using you because the only time i contact you is to ask for something" and then proceed to, and me being the usual obliging nice friend agreed to her request. I thought about it and decided then and there things had to change. Returned the call. Her husband answered..I .said something had come up and arrangement not possible...have never heard from her again...she was a school friend.

    3. Is it just me or are women more inclined than men to keep long term friendships? I've only kept in touch with one friend from my childhood. None from previous jobs or university. Perhaps I'm just anti-social. On the other hand, Carol has kept loads of long-term friendships. Mind you, the majority of my male friendships would be a very bad influence on me.

    4. You are a secure type of guy that has women as friends.:)

    5. Funnily enough I much prefer the company of women. I find they talk about more meaningful things - plus I do love a good gossip and a giggle too. I think its because my sister was only 14 months older than me and her friends were my friends.

    6. Not odd at all..you are a member of a dying breed of unconfused red blooded males who likes sheilas enough to hang out with them....it is the way it is meant to be. Good for you !

  6. Harsh! She was, after all that, a stranger. The poem is splendid, a speed run through a relationship. I cannot help thinking of slights I have given and taken when I might have made a different choice--and people I have hung on to though we have nothing in common accept knowing each other too well.

    1. Because I placed a value on long term relationships, I accepted behaviour deleterious to my self-esteem which I should never have tolerated. It is one of my regrets that I did not have the courage or the good sense to offload some of my "friends" sooner than I did. My life is so much better now without them.

  7. I love how a call from a good good friend can restart a friendship ~ Sometimes those connections are never lost ~

  12. I kept wanting this to end well. And I guess, depending on your point of view, it did. You can move on!

  13. I had to read through the comments and your replies, to make sure that I had the right "read" on this. I used to have a bad habit of trying to help people who didn't really want to be helped. Was getting so exahusted and heartsore, finally woke up and realized didn't need or want that kind of friend. It‘s hard to let go of people who have a lot of history with you, glad you were able to let go:-)

  14. So true. Our "friends" can use us and take advantage of the feelings we have for them. Strangers expect nothing in return for the kindness they give, the gentle words they speak or the smile they donate...

  15. Friends are always there even if we lose their number, life is full of forgotten moments. Nicely done,
