Doris Dreaming

doris promises herself
she is going to be jovial
this year

in spite of having to repeat
the same instructions
year in year out
over and over again
to her selectively deaf  husband

she is going to be resolute
about decluttering her house and
not entertain  politically incorrect thoughts
of slapping stupid people and stringing
them up by their feet

she may even ditch her akubra
become a domestic goddess
swanning around in a kimono
being very zen making tea
instead of mending fences

too late in life she came to realise
there are no prizes for being capable
the more you do
more is expected of you

there is a value in  contrived artifice
practised  time immemorial
by breathless helpless females
taught by mothers and grandmothers
(except doris's )

by next Christmas
she will be transformed
in pink ruffles
with long lacquered nails
and a squeaky voice
tending to the rose petals
on the tree

  4. I doubt it! Doris certainly exposes what it, but is not altogether sorry for her wish to slap stupidity around. Fun, important pleasure.

  5. I SO relate - the more you do, the more is expected of you. And the mothers and grandmothers' teachings (but not Doris's.) LOL. We might attempt the pink ruffles, but I suspect it would set all our people off into helpless guffaws.
