stop the clocks
betty churcher died
on this magnificent warm autumn day
of blues russet orange and vermilion
an artwork especially provided by the angels
in testament to her passing
australia's art world is mourning
for this passionate talented brave
gracious and beautiful woman
she was the fool that rushed in
where angels feared to tread
and it paid off
a mother of four the only woman
ever to be made director of
the National Art Gallery of Australia
while the press sneered at the idea
that a brisbane mum could be anything
before she lost her sight
she sketched all of her favourite works
so she could remember them
before she went completely blind
the colours do not shine as brightly
without you betty
you can never be replaced

Evicted ...Blanford Fletcher
When Betty Churcher first saw this painting at the Queensland Art Gallery at the age of 7 it changed her life. It made an impact. She describes it as a magic carpet taking her to another realm. Strangely enough the setting is in Autumn.

Beautifully expressed sentiments ... too few such women of passion, ability and taste. Wish there were more. A privilege to read.
