The Vegemite Kid

mindlovemisery's menagerie
memories # 105

everyone called him the vegemite kid
glossy black hair and rosy cheeks
a very cute 7 year old

at breakfast
his father was still at home
unusual because he normally left for the office  early
he was reading the newspaper circling bits
with a pencil
his mother looked concerned
they talked in muffled urgent tones

meanwhile
at school the boy next to him
asked for a page from his exercise book
because he had nothing to write on

vegemite kid burst into tears
he said he could not give him a page
because his father had lost his job

  4. Growing up in affluence it is always a shock to realize that the good times are not permanent. Certainly in Australia we have been so fortunate for years and now we have sold ourselves out and are paying the price.

  9. Oh my, this hits the heart. Poor little one that has taken on adult worries.

  10. Oh so sad. Kids soak up energy like sponges - I can see on the faces of kids at school who started their day happily, and who carry a weight that deadens their eyes...........well captured.
