mindlovemisery's menagerie
memories # 105
everyone called him the vegemite kid
glossy black hair and rosy cheeks
a very cute 7 year old
at breakfast
his father was still at home
unusual because he normally left for the office early
he was reading the newspaper circling bits
with a pencil
his mother looked concerned
they talked in muffled urgent tones
meanwhile
at school the boy next to him
asked for a page from his exercise book
because he had nothing to write on
vegemite kid burst into tears
he said he could not give him a page
because his father had lost his job
That really punches you in the chest, powerful writing

So young to be faced with these realities!
ReplyDeleteOh this is terribly sad .. and can happen more often than we think ... very powerful!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in affluence it is always a shock to realize that the good times are not permanent. Certainly in Australia we have been so fortunate for years and now we have sold ourselves out and are paying the price.
ReplyDeletesuch burdens for a child, is really very sad
ReplyDeletemuch love...

How very sad and so common these days.
ReplyDeleteYou touch the heart with this story poem.
ReplyDeleteOh my, this hits the heart. Poor little one that has taken on adult worries.
ReplyDeleteOh so sad. Kids soak up energy like sponges - I can see on the faces of kids at school who started their day happily, and who carry a weight that deadens their eyes...........well captured.
