on the ancient plains
where a mob of roos
greet me at sunrise

(Apologies for the poor quality of this pic. They are timid creatures
any closer ...and they take off.)
i'm at home
where country guys
wear akubras and work boots
ride horses drive utes
and call me luv
i'm at home
with big skies
where i can touch
the milky way and stars
with my finger
i'm at home
swimming in the harbour
swimming at the beach
swimming in a creek
swimming in a bath

i'm at home
with empty vast spaces
miles of white sandy beaches
few people
rusty corrugated iron
water tanks
dunnies and icy cold beer
i'm at home
going to the supermarket
in a swanky harbourside suburb
wearing shorts a singlet top
birds nest hair and a straw hat
straight from the beach
no one blinks an eyelid
i'm at home with you
but not enough to live
where you live

i'm only at home
in the wide brown land
here
at the bottom of the world
next stop
the south pole

Incredibly beautiful

so beautiful sketch of your home Rall, very inviting and the close is heavenly...
ReplyDeleteYou have truly found home in the beauty of life!
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is incredible!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds so beautiful where you live. How wonderful to see roos like that in the morning. Can we still be friends if I confess I don't know how to swim? Glad you do and it seems you love it. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home spot.
ReplyDeleteMyrna, you do know how to swim.Just do it.Learn and you will thank me forever:)
DeleteAnd you are so blessed to live in such beauty.....I can only imagine waking to a group of roos in the sunrise. Sigh. That would be heaven. I totally get the local attire, same in Tofino, we do dress uniquely. I LOVE how unique the locals are. Loved when I was one!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing so comforting as home, wherever it is. And nothing that hangs so heavy on the heart as not being there. Hell may well be an endless hotel room.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Your home is beautiful. I'm certainly a city-slicker by comparison, but your poem makes anyone envious, regardless of their locale.
ReplyDeleteI like that you have made the world your home in a way that fits you but not in a way that it doesn't naturally flow - if that makes sense - the penultimate verse made me sit up - sometimes it has to be that way i suppose
ReplyDeleteI love Australia and your poem explains why I love it, Rall! Well-penned!
ReplyDeleteI can also understand perfectly:
"i'm at home with you
but not enough to live
where you live." :-)
