uncertain times
the world in tatters
a global nightmare
doesn't look like changing
any time soon
what to do
what can a simple
reclusive aussie poet
past her expiry date
without wealth
\without status
without power
without connections
do about it
go to the supermarket
smile at everyone
make people laugh
make people happy
be a ray of sunshine
then
buy herself some flowers
go home
and make some meatballs

I like the idea of smiling at everyone, making them laugh, buying flowers! Good activities for these 'uncertain' times!
ReplyDeleteI love how grimly you give the state of the world and your outer identity, and then, finally, your joy and light come through. How I love meatballs! Bravo.
ReplyDeleteYou are truly a ray of sunshine and always make us smile week after week. I had a hearty laugh at the cutback-quote.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sumana.
DeleteI got a kick out of the end of the tunnel sign so much! I really love what the poet does in response and that she bought herself flowers. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteYour poem resonates with this British poet who prefers her own company most of the time, Rall. A smile and a laugh cost nothing. I’m currently enjoying the flowers I planted when it looked like nothing could cheer me up.
ReplyDeleteAnd you prove so beautifully that we can make a difference- wonderful- Jae
ReplyDeleteRall, you have found your niche in our worlds horrible state. Nicely said, Fitchgerald's words were a fine summation for your write. p.s. I had four meatballs in my Ramen Noodle Soup, they were from a package from the grocery store. I do also make a pretty and good egg, ham, and cheese sandwich on toasted brown wheat bread. I cook the eggs in the microwave using small square bread slice size baking dishes. No greasy frying pans to wash. Mrs J doesn't cook any more.

Yes, it is the small everyday things that we all take for granted in our country that make for certainty and happiness, Rall. How many millions the world over don't have any of those small things!
ReplyDeleteRall, this is a great reminder than I need to stop doomscrolling and, you know, make meatballs. These little moments of magic are so worth it. Refreshes me for return to the fight. A
ReplyDeleteI'm off to make meatballs!
