White Ribbon Day

3WW...illustrious habitual jumbled
Midweek Motif...PU

FOR THE 78 WOMEN MURDERED ...AND 28,000 ASSAULT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE THIS YEAR IN AUSTRALIA

habitual denigration
verbally and physically
by men towards women
is in epidemic proportions

it navigates all
social echelons from the illustrious
to the average joe

often confused
by the jumbled mixed messages
tears and declarations of love
false promises and flowers
the women stay
a lot having nowhere to go

the few lucky ones
leave or outlive the perpetrators
the remainder either die literally or figuratively
the children scarred for life

misogyny
the curse and shame of our age

  1. the remainder either die literally or figuratively the children scarred for life - well, this certainly resonates in this sensitively written and powerful poem..the photo of Nigella and Saatchi certainly was shocking..of course the same happens to many women not taken out to fancy restaurants but the audacity to treat your partner like a dog in public view is the ultimate arrogance...and control

  2. Curse and shame of our age. Yes. And it enters into wars we think of as purely religious or territorial as well as those that are domestic. Misogyny. How did so many learn such hate??

  3. Yes. A child who witnesses domestic violence takes many long years to recover and often repeats the cycle. In Canada, indigenous women are especially targeted, though domestic violence crosses all cultures, as you have noted. Thank you for writing on this important topic and reminding of us that this day recognizes women victims of violence.

  4. Such has been the curse of this crime through the ages and still, it continues as if violence again women is justified. Excellent write. I had a friend whose husband treated her in like manner in public...one day, I guess she woke up. Now she is a happy Lesbian lawyer in Boston and truly happy. When she called me one day to catch up and blurted out all the changes of a few months I most happily said to her, You go girl!!!!

  5. I was so lucky to have not experienced this when a child but even then it was clear by the discussion with other kids at school it was the norm for them and already they were becoming bullies themselves.

  6. This is a sad fact of life. I wonder that children survive having witnessed such violence in their own homes.

  10. I am always shocked by the shameful Australian statistics, Rall, no matter how may times I see them. It is a seemingly endless cycle.
Misanthropy, I would say rather than misogyny. It's just that the women and children are the more vulnerable that these cowards feel most comfortable attacking...
