sweet
nonna
she makes clothes
loves rumba dance
lives near a train track
humming away at work
she thinks of bright orange groves
the white farmhouse and her pablo
how she moved here for her children's sake
how she will never fit into this place
they will prosper eventually
at least she has her family
they all dance that's important
sometimes thinking of him
she wonders if he
would have liked it
living here
she thinks
not
I love these up-and-downers. such a nice way to phrase a poem.
ReplyDeletejust worried she will get run over, living on the track :-)
Real estate is very very expensive here:)
ReplyDeleteoh the sacrifices we make for our kids....
ReplyDeletei know that out of place feeling...but it sounds like she
has a good heart....
i really love the poem...reminds me of a picture in our old family album...my aunts getting drunk together...their husbands dancing in the background.
ReplyDeletei had to read it twice. great write.

I like her jovial spirit whatever might be the circumstances..." humming away at work'.. ..shows her strength...nice lines
ReplyDeleteEven though she has a hard life right now, hopefully her children will be better off because of her move.
ReplyDeleteThe sacrifices mothers make for their kids......who will move on into their successful lives, perhaps leaving her still precariously struggling. Yes, she is strong.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful introspection of a widow living with memories and clinging to her family as that is all she has left and the rumba of course.
ReplyDeleteLove your diamond shaped dance of present and past.
ReplyDeleteFrom my view, Rumba is the most beautiful and romantic dance around. I love that cut from the film, but I recall that even more impressive in that film was the Pasodoble sequence when the girls parents demonstrate how to dance the "real pasodoble" for the arrogant couple. Do you know it?
ReplyDeleteYour poem seems beautifully sad to me. The woman's longing is palpable, and the dance, symbolic of the lost relationship, is inadequate to dispel that longing. But then the last lines attempting to justify her choices does nothing to dispel it either.
I do recall that scene . My favourite was the father dancing alone around the hills hoist...some fabulous cameo scenes in tha tmovie. There were so many scenes I would have preferred to use rather than this one but they are not on you tube I changed the ending. Should not have done that...I have been censoring my poems lately but I cannot keep on writing about Spanish widows and geraniums to avoid those who read themselves into my poems, so it all stops now. Thank you for you considered comment.. If nonna's longing is palpable then she is feeling this independently of me. I am longing to get some sleep . It is 1.30am here I'm having my tea ,enjoying the magical quiet and off to zzz.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked my poem. Toodle pip:)
I think that she set her priorities right... a dance is one thing.. living is another.
ReplyDeleteI'm shakin' by butt and two steppin' into the day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, as usual with a great big smile on my face.
