far from the madding crowd
here in the mudgee bush
surrounded by scribbly gums
shading the graves from the sun
no one has visited in a long time
peaceful and overgrown
nothing clipped or trimmed
the trees forever watch over
the sleeping spirits
i am reminded that no matter
how intensely gifted we are
this is our end
to rot and dissipate to dust
and in this silent serenity
i am also reminded
of how short our stay is
of what really matters
of how hard it is to find
of how intent you were
on throwing it away
of how we are now
already dead to each other
Powerful ending!
ReplyDeleteYour ending is indeed powerful, gaspingly so!
ReplyDeletewow stunning ending
ReplyDeleteIt's sad when that eerie emptiness of the graveyard settles in between two hearts...powerfully expressed....
ReplyDeleteThe mudgee bushes and scribbly gums make it sound like a magical place but reality creeps into the ending like a thud...in a good way poetically mind!
ReplyDeletestrong reminders to those of us who still live to do more than go through the motions of living... and how sadly true the last lines ring
ReplyDeleteI have visited some graveyards that look like this--neglected and overgrown--old family cemeteries in rural areas. They are quite sad.
ReplyDeleteThere is a morbid curiosity in visiting old graveyards. I like to think as we do that the worn words speak to us saying "don't waste you time here for there is so much to do".
ReplyDeleteI love graveyards and the inspiration they provide. Also, please tell me they are really called scribbly gums :D
ReplyDeleteYep....scribbly gums they are !
Deletebeautiful powerful piece!
ReplyDeletestunning close ~
ReplyDeleteAs we speak we are hurtling 4ward to a death we know not .... It can happen just like that so unexpectantly
ReplyDeletepowerful message, we all know our end but did nothing to make it better
ReplyDeleteNature's Plan
Poignant and powerful, Rall. The realisation of the finality and inevitability of death still hasn't dawned on many people up until the moment they die, which explains why the live wasting their lives...
